Samsung LED TV Series Launched

It’s a TV! “That’s not a gadget” we hear you sigh, but when a TV is as clever as this Samsung LED TV, it most definitely is. At first glance we were taken by its stylish look. A large screen set into a glass look piano black frame always looks the part and when you put that on a crystal necked stand, it really is quite striking. But that aint new.

Once turned on the picture quality is most definitely High Def and runs at 100mhz, to help reduce that edge blur effect you get in big fast action sequences. But again, nothing new. It is pretty new and mighty impressive when you consider the screen itself is only 1.2” thick! Now things are starting to look up. On closer inspection we found out that this stunning beast also has a multitude of connection possibilities. These stack up to an impressive 4 x HDMI ports, 2 x USB ports, a DTV Tuner, wireless LAN and internet TV. Yup, we did say wireless Lan and internet TV. It comes in a 40”, 46” or a 55 and has been designed as a single moulded piece of tech (like the ipod). Oh, and apparently its “green” and has a much smaller “footprint” than other tellies.

Why do I want it?
Unless you have a pretty special TV already, this would definitely be a “trade up”. For starters it looks sexier than a strip club to a monk and is thinner than a supermodels lunchbox. 1.2” thick for a TV is insane! To put it in context (sort of), it is thinner than the centre finger bone of the average mans middle finger (don’t try and work that out while drunk). Because it is so thin it easily fixes to your wall, allowing you to mount this piece of tech art anywhere that has a solid(ish) surface. Once powered up it has fantastic picture quality with a great refresh rate.

When you couple this up with the HDMI connections it possesses it really does scream Hi-Def gaming to us. Bored of watching films and gaming? Simply connect to the internet and view some much loved comedy YouTube clips. These Samsung LED TVs certainly beats being sat at your PC in the dingy study, and could make watching those “special” movies you like, that little bit more “satisfying”. Still think its not worthy to be classed as a gadget? Didn’t think so.

Sharp Mebius comes with LCD Trackpad

It seems like only yesterday that I was discussing trackpad issues with the SmartTrack Neo. Actually, it was yesterday.

It would appear that Sharp has created a netbook with a trackpad like no other, as the Mebius PC-NJ70A trackpad is also an LCD. This four-inch screen has a resolution of 854 x 4850, and it can be used as a secondary display.

The LCD trackpad has a lot of cool things to do: like a paint program, a calculator, a piano keyboard, and a very interesting bowling game. As for the other features, the Mebius has 160GB HDD, 1GB of RAM, a 1.6GHz Atom CPU, as well as a three USB ports, a multicard reader, and WiFi capabiltiy. The big (or should I say bigger?) screen is at 10.1 inches, with a resolution of 1024 x 600.

No doubt the Sharp Mebius is designed to compete with the rumor that Apple’s newest MacBook will come with a glass touchscreen. It doesn’t look like Apple is going to make that particular MacBook model, so Sharp stands to make a huge profit on this one.

There is no word on when this particular netbook will be released, but it is rumored to have a relatively high price at $817.

Sigma’s new Zoom is enormous

Sigma is on a roll in the digital slr world. Seems like after 20 plus years of languishing as a third tier lens manufacturer, the value base glass maker has come across a series of designs that has even Photography magazine buzzing almost every issue. So when they recently came out with a 200-500mm f2.8 lens, the reaction should have been a predictable one. Until the size became apparent. It’s HUGE.

Weighing in at nearly fifty pounds, this Sigma lens is not for anyone with a steady hand and a regular gym membership. In addition to covering the popular 200-500mm range at f2.8, it can double the focal length and still clock in at f5.6 – which isn’t too bad if one has a beefy tripod to hold it still. This Big Bertha like lens would be very popular for astrophotography, sports and wildlife shots thanks to its low dispersion glass elements for image correction. The multi-layer coating reduces glare and ghosting, and it’s specially designed lens hood blocks out annoying ambient light. There is also a built in LCD panel for live view when not looking into the camera’s SLR viewfinder or LCD. The lens is powered by a single dedicated lithium ion battery (BP_21) for auto focusing and zooming operations which would make holding this mammoth a heck of a lot easier.

But the cost is equally heavy at a hefty $28,000.

The Importance of Warranty

Many gadget users put premium towards the warranty that comes along with their laptop, mobile phone or PDA since no one will know when they would suddenly breakdown. Warranty provides a sense of security for gadget purchasers for the reason that they only want to be assured that they have a means of being able to exchange defective units in cases where faulty production and manufacturing may suddenly fall into their hands.

Switching from CRT to LCD Monitors

It is obvious that people would want to get in the times and switch to the vast available LCD monitors today that not only emphasizes on screen resolution but space management as well. Seeing that these products are selling just like pieces of cigarettes in Taiwan in my last trip to Taiwan last December, it was obvious that seeing them had a reason. The time to get myself an LCD monitor of my own!

I will forever regret of not buying one when I was in Taiwan. The priced has a difference of around $40 compared to the local retailers. The brands available there included Asus, Samsung, Pioneer and AOC. Pressed for time and with my mind spinning from the available products there, I chose not to get one and postpone my purchase through my friend and associate who could send the monitor to me at any time I would wish.

But once I got back home, it took me only 24 hours to use my old AOC CRT monitor and it got busted as quickly as I used it. While I remember what my friend told me, I needed a monitor badly since I had a lot of pending jobs in the form of article writing and blog entries to catch up on. My solution? What else but to buy a new monitor. Apparently, it was the Christmas Rush so I really had problems of transporting a large CRT monitor to my car as parking was really a drag.

I came across this Samsung SyncMaster 740N LCD monitor which I bargained until I could afford it. I ended up getting one for $200.00. If I got one in Taiwan, I would have gotten it for $150.00! Nevertheless I just considered it as a Christmas gift for myself. Besides, its been a while since I bought something worthwhile, and being able to buy my very own LCD monitor has its fulfillment in a way.
